Desktops 400 times dirtier than toilet seats

Washington, August 28 (ANI): Do you often eat at your home/office desk? You may not want to hear this, but a new study has found that an average desktop has 100 times more bacteria than a kitchen table and 400 times more than the average toilet seat.
The research also found that a whopping 83 percent of Americans typically eat in their office or cubicle in an effort to save time and money.
According to a new survey by the American Dietetic Association and ConAgra Foods' Home Food Safety program, a majority of Americans continue to eat lunch (62 percent) and snack throughout the day (50 percent) at their desks, while 27 percent typically find breakfast the first thing on their desktop to-do list. Late nights at the office even leave a small percentage (4 percent) dining at their desktop for dinner.
"For many people, multitasking through lunch is part of the average workday," said registered dietician and ADA Spokesperson Toby Smithson.
"While shorter lunch hours may result in getting more accomplished, they could also be causing workers to log additional sick days, as desktops hide bacteria that can lead to food borne illness," she said.
In order to reduce the risk of food borne illness, Smithson recommends washing your hands before and after handling food with soap and warm water, and keeping your desk stocked with moist towelettes or hand sanitizer for those times you can't get to the sink.
"A clean desktop and hands are your best defense to avoid food borne illnesses at the office," she says.
According to the Home Food Safety survey, only 36 percent of respondents clean their work areas-desktop, keyboard, mouse-weekly and 64 percent do so only once a month or less.
"Treat your desktop like you would your kitchen table and counters at home," says Smithson.
"Clean all surfaces, whether at home or work, before you prepare or eat food on them," she added. (ANI)

HTC launches glasses-free 3D smartphone

New Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS) Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Tuesday launched its smartphone HTC EVO 3D, which can be used without 3D glasses.
Priced at Rs.35,990, the phone features a 3D 4.3-inch display and a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm snapdragon dual-core processor. It also features dual 5 megapixel cameras, which can be used to capture both conventional and 3D images and videos.

Samsung Smartphone

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics unveiled three smartphone models that run on its own operating system, as it seeks to expand market share in the low-end segment and diversify its lineups heavily focused on Google's Android software.
The Wave series models backed by Samsung's proprietary system "bada" reflects the South Korean firm's shift in strategy from being a pure hardware manufacturer to become more software-focused.
It is also aimed at pulling together Samsung's different products of smartphones, televisions, printers and computers under its own software platform and online application store Samsung Apps.
Samsung on Tuesday unveiled Wave 3 with a 4-inch AMOLED screen and a 5 megapixel camera, as well as cheaper Wave M and Wave Y. The Wave M will have Samsung's first instant messaging tool chatON installed and entry-level Wave Y with 3.2-inch display will go on sale in October.
The three models add to 7 Wave series lineups Samsung introduced since first bada-based product went on sale in May 2010.
Samsung, whose flagship Android-based Galaxy S models helped it become the world's No.2 smartphone maker in the second quarter, is now focusing on emerging markets with cheaper phones costing $200 or below.
Last week Samsung unveiled four new mid-to-low end models running on Android to defend its market share, as Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL ), which has long stuck to the higher end of a booming mobile device arena, is set to launch a lower-cost version of the iPhone 4 soon.
The Wave series will allow access to Samsung Apps, which has around 13,000 applications.
The number is dwarfed by more than 100,000 applications available in Android market and over 300,000 apps from Apple's App Store.
